History
According to mythology. Corfu has been identified with the island of Faeakes mentioned by Homer. The archaeological researches, though have not proved it. In 734 B.C., Corfu was colonised by the Corinthians and became independent. It was the second naval power after Athens. Its democratic regime as well as its refusal to subordinate to Corinth was the cause of the Peloponnesian War. Its power kept being significant during the 4th cent B.C., when it fought on Athens side (battle of Heronia, 338 B.C. ).
In 301 B.C., the town is occupied by the tyrant of Sicely, Agothokles and later on by Illyrioe. There was a kind of autonomy in the Roman Times. In the Byzantine times, Corfu became an integral, part of Byzantium which was often suffered from barbaric raids. Venetians occupied Corfu ( 1205 - 1214 ). In 1214 - 1267. It was a country of Epirus domain with some special privileges. The inhabitants of Corfu turned to Venetians, since the former were tormented by the raids of Andegavoe. The venetian occupation ceased in 1799, when the town was occupied by the French. Corfu was the victim of the international political competition. Corfu also faced the cruelty of the English blockade, which ended only after the defeat of Napoleo. The English occupation ( 1810 - 1863 ) is characferished by the continuous struggles of the inhabitants in order that Corfu could be united with Greece. It was finally incorporated to Greece in 1863. In 1923, after the assassination of the Italian General Telini, Corfu was bombarded and occupied for three months by the Italians. In the World War II the Italians annexed Corfu to Italy. However, after their defeat Corfu was set free becoming the flourishing center of the Greeks of Ionian Sea. The island of Paxoe seems to have been populated since the 5th cent. by Phoenixes, who called it Paxoe. Its history is identified with the history of Corfu. The Paxoe naval battle : in 1537, a naval battle took place near Paxoe. The christian fleet crushed the Turks
